How it works
Upload a photo
Pick a clear picture with a simple subject — a pet, a flower, a name, a logo you drew. Drag it in or tap to choose.
Choose stitches and colors
Set how many stitches (or C2C tiles) wide the blanket is and how many yarn colors you want. Fewer colors = easier color changes.
Pick a crochet style
C2C gives one tile per square and diagonal rows. Graphgan and tapestry use one single crochet per square, worked in rows.
Download and start
Save the chart as PNG or a printable PDF, plus a text file with row-by-row color counts so you never lose your place.
What is a crochet pattern generator?
A crochet pattern generator turns a picture into a grid chart. Every square on the chart is one stitch (or one C2C tile), and every color is one yarn. Instead of drawing a graph by hand on paper, the tool shrinks your photo to the stitch count you want, groups similar shades into a small number of yarn colors, and prints a symbol in each square so the chart still works in black and white.
C2C, graphgan or tapestry — which one?
C2C (corner to corner) is worked diagonally in small tiles; it is the most popular way to make picture blankets because color changes are easy. Graphgan charts use one single crochet per square in straight rows, which gives a finer picture. Tapestry crochet carries the unused yarn inside the stitches, so the back stays neat — great for bags and wall hangings.
How big will my blanket be?
Multiply the number of squares by your gauge. With worsted weight yarn, a C2C tile is roughly 1 inch (2.5 cm), so a 60 × 80 chart makes about a 60" × 80" throw. Single crochet is smaller — around 4–5 stitches per inch — so use more stitches for the same size.
FAQ
Is this crochet pattern generator free?
Yes. Making the chart, the color key, the row-by-row counts and the PNG and PDF downloads are all free, with no account.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. The pattern is made with JavaScript inside your browser. The image is never sent to a server, so it stays private.
How do I read the C2C row counts?
Row 1 is the single tile in the bottom-left corner. Each row is one diagonal. The list tells you how many tiles of each color to make in that row, e.g. "3 C1, 2 C4". Odd rows read from the bottom-right end of the diagonal, even rows from the top-left end.
How many colors should I use?
For a first blanket, 4–8 colors is easiest. Photos of faces or landscapes may need 10–16. Each extra color means more yarn ends to weave in.
What size should my chart be?
For a baby blanket in C2C, try 40–50 tiles wide. For a throw, 60–80. For a pillow or bag in single crochet, 40–60 stitches is a good start.
Which photos work best?
Simple, high-contrast pictures with a plain background. Crop tightly around the subject before uploading for the best result.
